Patrick Wins Massachusetts Democratic Gubernatorial Primary
Former Coca-Cola Executive Deval Patrick (D) on Tuesday won the Massachusetts Democratic gubernatorial primary over state Attorney General Tom Reilly and Chris Gabrieli, the New York Times reports (Zezima, New York Times, 9/20). Patrick has said he supports stem cell research and has advocated that it receive more state funding. He will face Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey (R), who has said she supports a law Gov. Mitt Romney (R) in May 2005 vetoed that allows human cloning for research purposes but bans human cloning for the purpose of reproduction. The legislative branch overrode Romney's veto (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 3/1). Independent Christy Mihos and Grace Ross of the Green-Rainbow Party also are running for governor (Phillips, Boston Globe, 9/20). Healey, who supports abortion rights, has said she backs a state law that requires minors under age 18 seeking abortions to obtain permission from a parent or guardian before undergoing the procedure. Mihos on his campaign Web site says that he supports a "woman's right to choose" and parental notification requirements when minors seek abortions. Both Mihos and Healey declined to fill out questionnaires submitted to the candidates by NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 8/9).
