Reducing enzyme in fatty tissue helps weight loss
The researchers announced their findings Monday in the online version of the U.S. medical journal Nature Medicine. The discovery is expected to be used in the treatment of obesity and diabetes.
The research team, led by Prof. Iichiro Shimomura, an expert on endocrine metabolomics, and Prof. Junji Takeda, working in embryological engineering, focused on the enzyme PTEN, which is closely related to cell proliferation and cancer prevention. PTEN exists in every organ of the human body, but the team developed mice whose fat tissue did not contain the enzyme.
