SUFU 2008 Winter Meeting - Highlights Of The Moderated Neurourology, BPH, Female Urology Podium Session

UroToday.com - Dr. Twiss and colleagues from UCLA reported the validation study of the incontinence symptom severity index (ISS). The ISS, a self-assessment instrument, is designed to assess symptom severity across several areas including emptying ability, urgency, and incontinence. Overall, the IPSS was demonstrated to have good consistency, reliability, validity and response to change.

-- Dr. Kim et al. reported the 10-year outcomes following AUS placement. With a median follow up of 6.8 years, a complication (mechanical failure, erosion, infection) rate of 37% was identified. Most complications were seen within the initial 48-month follow-up. Nonetheless, functional outcomes remained durable with 80% of patients maintaining social continence at long-term follow-up.

-- Dr. Crivellaro and associates reported the anatomic dissection of 35 female cadavers in an attempt to confirm the anatomic basis described in the integral theory by Petros and Ulmsten. The authors describe several anatomic contraindications to the integral theory, leading them to suggest a reconsideration of our understanding of the anatomical mechanism underlying incontinence.

-- Dr. Lemack reported the analysis of select patients with SUI in an attempt to define variables predictive of voiding dysfunction following pubovaginal sling or Burch colposuspension. In this analysis, no pre-operative urodynamic findings were predictive of voiding dysfunction in either group. In addition, reductions in the prevalence of urgency were seen and did not differ in comparing both sling types.
