Smokers die 10 years earlier, if you give up you halve your risk, even if you give up at 50

A fifty-year study has revealed that smoking reduces your life expectancy by ten years. If you give up smoking you halve your risk of dying early, even if you give up at the age of 50.

According to this study, those who give up before they are 30 can eliminate the risk of dying prematurely completely.

Sir Richard Doll, the man who first discovered the link between cancer and smoking fifty years ago said "Cigarette smoking reduces the expectation of life by 10 years. It is clear that consistent cigarette smoking doubles mortality throughout adult life - middle and old age. It is also clear that giving up smoking can eliminate a very large part of the hazard."

In June, 1954, Sir Richard first confirmed the link between smoking and lung cancer. His study was published in The British Medical Journal. When he first announced his findings, a couple of years before publication, nobody believed him.

His study at the time surveyed the smoking habits of 34,439 British doctors. The study has been ongoing for the last fifty years and has concluded that of those doctors, the ones who smoke (smoked) live (lived) ten years less than the non-smokers. The ongoing study was done by Sir Richard Doll and Sir Richard Peto, Oxford University, UK.

Sir Richard had not initially expected his study to go on for so long. He had planned to carry out a five-year-study. However, he found the project so intriguing that he kept it going for half a century.

At the beginning of his study he was a smoker. A couple of years into it, he was so alarmed by what he found that he gave up. "I gave up smoking at age 37 when I saw the results of our first study. They were quite convincing to me."

Apart from finding the smoking and lung cancer link, Sir Richard's studies also found a link between smoking and heart disease. "We thought we'd better carry the study on for a lot longer and see if smoking causes anything else and by goodness it does. "By the time we did the 40-year follow-up, we found there were some 25 diseases which smoking seemed to cause and that the mortality was about double with the consistency of smoking."

He found that of the men born in the 1920s who became regular smokers, 66% died as a result of smoking.

Experts say that over one billion people will be killed as a result of smoking during this century.
