State Licensure For Midwives Needed To Give Women Choices, Letter To Editor Says
When Indiana midwives are eligible for state licensure, women "will be able to make informed decisions about their care," Mary Lawlor, president of the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives, writes in a New York Times letter to the editor in response to a recent Times article on midwifery (Lawlor, New York Times, 4/9). The Times on April 3 examined how Indiana and nine other states prohibit the practice of medicine and midwifery by individuals other than licensed doctors and nurses. According to the Midwives Alliance of North America, there are about 3,000 practicing midwives nationwide without formal medical training, and approximately 1,100 midwives are certified by the North American Registry of Midwives, a private agency whose evaluations are recognized by about 20 states (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 4/4). Midwives currently are eligible for national certification, as well as state licensure in some states, Lawlor writes, adding, "National certification and state licensure provide pathways to assess the competency of midwives and to establish appropriate routes of accountability for the profession" (New York Times, 4/9).
