Surviving summer festivals if you have asthma

The summer has arrived gloriously this year (for those in the Northern Hemisphere) and with it comes the start of the festival season. There are a huge number of festivals happening this summer and everyone wants to be a part of it, including people with asthma. Here are some pointers to ensure that your asthma is kept well controlled - even though you might not be!

At festivals you will no doubt encounter a number of triggers including dogs, pollens, smoke and strange odours. These things all have the potential for worsening your asthma. Before you attend a festival, it would be ideal to have your asthma reviewed by your doctor or asthma nurse.

They can ensure that you asthma is under control, make sure you have enough medication and develop an asthma action plan with you. An action plan is a written plan that details how you can adjust your medications according to worsening or improving symptoms.

It's definitely exciting preparing to go to a festival, so make sure you don't get so carried away that you forget to take your inhalers.

If it's a one-day festival, take your preventer inhaler before and after the event and have your reliever with you. If it's an overnight festival, it is a good idea to take two sets of reliever inhaler (in case you lose one) and your preventer. Keep one reliever in your tent with your preventer (so you know where they are… as long as you remember where your tent is!) and carry the other one around with you.

It is important that you remember to take your preventer regularly, morning and evening. Hopefully by doing this, you will avoid experiencing symptoms and hampering your enjoyment. If you accidentally miss taking a dose of preventer, just make sure you take the next.

Find out where the first aid tents are - just in case. And a final piece of festival advice - keep the cap on your inhaler! It's amazing what can find its way into an inhaler accidentally that you probably don't want in your airways!

If you want to talk to someone before you go, please contact the Adviceline and speak to an asthma nurse specialist. We hope you enjoy the festival fun!

Call the Asthma UK Adviceline weekdays 9am-5pm on 08745 01 02 03 or email an asthma nurse specialist.
