Tenofovir Plus Emtricitabine Combo May Protect From HIV Transmission

According to new research, the combination of tenofovir with emtricitabine - under the trade name Truvada - can protect monkeys from getting the AIDS virus. The research was carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the USA.

The CDC says human trials will be carried out in Botswana too see whether Truvada offers humans the same protection (as it does for monkeys).

The test on monkeys protected all six of them from becoming infected with the AIDS virus. They were administered Truvada and then exposed to both monkey and human AIDS viruses every week for 14 weeks - none of them was infected. In a control group of monkeys (not given Truvada), most of them became infected.

- Tenofovir is also known as Viread
- Emtricitabine is also known as Emtriva
- Truvada = Tenofovir plus Emtriva combination
