The adverse health effects of lead

The adverse health effects of lead are most severe for developing fetuses, infants and children. For infants and children, exposure to elevated levels of lead in drinking water can contribute to lowering of IQ, attention deficits, learning disabilities, loss of hearing and other physical or mental development problems.

Short-term exposure to elevated levels of lead can include interference with red blood cell chemistry, and kidney problems or slight increases in the blood pressure of some adults. Over the course of a lifetime, exposure to moderately elevated lead levels can contribute to stroke, and kidney disease. Acute lead poisoning can lead to coma and death, especially in infants and children.

Although the main sources of exposure to lead are ingesting paint chips and inhaling dust, EPA estimates that 10 to 20 percent of human exposure to lead may come from lead in drinking water. Infants who consume mostly mixed formula can receive 40 to 60 percent of their exposure to lead from drinking water.
