U.S. Has 'Consistent' But 'Conflicted' Beliefs On Abortion Rights, Survey Finds

An AP-Ipsos poll shows how U.S. residents have remained "extremely consistent" and "extremely conflicted in their beliefs" on the issue of abortion rights, the AP/Contra Costa Times reports. Despite the appointment of two Supreme Court justices, Samuel Alito and John Roberts, and a South Dakota law (HB 1215) that bans abortion in the state except to save a pregnant woman's life, there is "no evidence" that U.S. residents are reconsidering their opinions on abortion, according to the AP/Times. The poll, taken from Feb. 28 to March 2, finds that 19% of U.S. residents surveyed think abortion should be legal in all cases, 16% think it should be illegal in all cases and 6% are undecided. Nearly three-fifths of those surveyed are in the middle and believe abortion should be legal only in certain circumstances. According to the poll, 52% of participants feel abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 43% think it should be illegal in all or most cases. The poll also finds that two-thirds of Democrats surveyed say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, and two-thirds of Republicans surveyed say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases. In addition, people surveyed were evenly split when asked whether the federal government or state governments should decide abortion-related policy. Approximately two-thirds of those surveyed agree with the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision -- which effectively barred state abortion bans -- while one-fourth said it should be overturned (Benac, AP/Contra Costa Times, 3/13).
