U.S. Health Care System Should Focus On Preventive Health, According To Report
The U.S. health care system should focus on disease prevention, according to a report released on Tuesday at the Johns Hopkins/Healthways 6th Annual Outcomes Summit, the Tennessean reports. Among other recommendations, the report -- based on a consensus of more than 200 physicians, policymakers, patients, health care purchasers and "thought leaders" -- proposes tax incentives and penalties to promote healthy behavior, according to Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and disease management company Healthways. In a statement, Fred Brancati, director of general internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said, "This year's consensus report outlines the beginnings of a delivery model ... that will improve lives and lower health care costs." He added, "We've known for years that prevention works, and this report lays the groundwork for a national system that delivers on the promise of preventive care" (Pack, Tennessean, 4/4).
