U.S. News & World Report Examines HRT, Women's Health Initiative Studies

U.S. News & World Report in its March 6 issue examines hormone replacement therapy and the results of recently released Women's Health Initiative studies on HRT, low-fat diets and calcium and vitamin D supplements. Summaries appear below.
"Defining the Future: The Story Behind the Landmark Women's Health Study That Is Creating Exciting Breakthroughs": U.S. News examines the history of WHI and why it is "perhaps the most dramatic and ambitious act in a long-running debate on women's health" (Hsu, U.S. News & World Report, 3/6).

"The Hormone Dilemma: The Latest Flip-Flop on Hormone Therapy Gives New Hope to Younger Women": U.S. News examines the history of HRT and the conflicting studies surrounding its benefits and risks. While "[t]here's no cut-and-dried conclusion" on whether to use HRT, "for women suffering serious symptoms of menopause, the risks and benefits of [HRT] are well worth a closer look," U.S. News reports (Larson, U.S. News & World Report, 3/6).

"Hello, His and Her Healthcare: Medicine Now Recognizes That Women Are Different": U.S. News examines the possible effects that the differences between men and women might have on preventing and treating diseases. "Understanding the role that genetics and hormones play in the way illness" -- such as heart disease, autoimmune diseases, cancer and mental disorders -- "develops and responds to treatment" likely will have benefits for both men's and women's health, according to U.S. News (Hobson, U.S. News & World Report, 3/6).

Bernadine Healy, "The Best Is Yet To Be": The WHI studies have been "a transforming force for women's well-being, a humbling experience for medicine and -- at first glance -- a story whose messages seem highly contradictory," Healy, who in 1991 started WHI at NIH, writes in an opinion piece. She adds that the contradictions can be thought of as "puzzlement for a good cause," adding, "[T]he studies have refined conventional wisdom about blanket solutions ... and point the way to a future in which medicine will be more powerfully predictive, preventive and personalized" (Healy, U.S. News & World Report, 3/6).
