UAW President Says Union Will Not Make Concessions This Year On Auto Workers' Health Care Benefits
United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger on Wednesday said that the union will not agree to additional health care concessions in contract negotiations this summer with automakers GM, Ford Motor and DaimlerChrysler, the New York Times reports. In comments to reporters at the end of a two-day UAW collective bargaining convention, Gettelfinger said, "We addressed health care in '05," when the union agreed to allow GM and Ford to charge hourly employees for part of their health benefits. He added, "You don't get two bites at the apple, do you?" Dan Flores, a GM spokesperson, said that the company last year spent $4.8 billion on health care for 1.1 million employees, retirees and dependents. "Based on the magnitude of the cost, health care will continue to be a discussion issue for GM and the UAW," Flores said. He added that the company would consider "a variety of alternatives to address the health care burden." Some experts have recommended that a UAW trust fund, rather than the automakers, should pay for retiree health benefits to help address the issue. In addition, Gettelfinger and officials for automakers have recommended a national health care system, a proposal that the companies discussed with President Bush last fall (Bunkley, New York Times, 3/29).
