UNISON Hosts International HIV/AIDS Conference, UK
Delegates include local representatives from teaching, nursing, and local government unions, from countries such as Botswana and Swaziland - where infection rates are the highest in the world. They have in depth experience of living and working with HIV/AIDS in all public sector employments. The initial project found that workers with HIV/AIDS experience discrimination, which interacts with cultural, economic and social practises to further discriminate. The nature of public sector work such as teaching and nursing, and the high and rising infection rates mean that we need to develop strategies for living and working with HIV/AIDS. This project will allow this to happen and will foster an international network of resources and expertise to do so.
UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis commented:
" HIV/AIDS is the most destructive epidemic in history. As access to antiretroviral drugs increases, and infection rates continue apace more people will be living and working with the disease. Unions occupy a unique position in the fight to achieve fair and just conditions for all at work. With infection concentrated in Southern Africa this project could not have more relevancy in any other region. We all have a responsibility to help fight HIV/AIDS and UNISON are pleased to be doing their bit".
