USA Today Examines Differences Between Male, Female Bosses on Offering, Reducing Health Benefits
USA Today on Wednesday examined how female employers are less likely to reduce health benefits than male employers as costs continue to increase. According to entrepreneurship experts at the Center for Women's Business Research, Rochester Institute of Technology and Springboard Enterprises, female employers appear less likely to reduce health benefits than male employers because of personal experience, responsibility for family health care and higher frequency of health care use. For a study published in 2002, researchers at RIT surveyed 261 female and male entrepreneurs and found that 65% of female respondents, compared with 29% of male respondents, cited the establishment of workplaces with health and "family friendly" benefits as an important reason that they sought self-employment. Marsha Firestone -- founder and president of Women Presidents' Organization, a trade group -- said that the personal experience women have with health care makes them more aware of the needs of employees. She added, "They have a simpatico, an empathy." Overall, about 60% of employers currently offer health benefits, compared with 69% in 2000, according to a survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation. No statistics exist on the difference in the rate of health benefits offered by female and male employers, USA Today reports. However, CWBR Executive Director Sharon Hadary said that the center has begun to raise funds to study the issue (Hopkins, USA Today, 10/5).
