University Of Central Florida College Of Nursing Receives 10-Year Accreditation
The commission granted the maximum period of accreditation with "no issues or concerns," the best-possible grade.
"The 10-year accreditation speaks to the fact that we have an excellent program, solid curricula, that we're open to peer review and that we have outstanding faculty, staff and students," said college Dean Jean Leuner.
The UCF nursing program has been accredited since 1981, the year that its first class graduated.
The accreditation process, including preparations by the college, took more than a year. A team from the commission visited the college in March and spent several days reviewing the program and interviewing faculty, students, alumni, staff, administrators and members of partner organizations such as Orlando Regional Medical Center and Florida Hospital.
According to the commission, accreditation is intended to accomplish five goals. They are: to hold nursing programs accountable; to evaluate the success of a nursing program in achieving its mission, goals and outcomes; to assess the extent to which a nursing program meets accreditation standards; to inform the public of the purpose and values of accreditation; and to foster continuing improvement in the nursing programs - and thereby in professional practice.
Achieving the 10-year status is also important because it assures applicants of the high quality and integrity of the baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs, Leuner said.
The UCF College of Nursing programs are thriving with more than 850 students enrolled this semester. The program began as a department in 1978 and grew into a school in 1995. It became the 11th UCF college in July 2007. It offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, including the doctor of nursing practice and doctor of philosophy in nursing.
