Unmarried U.S. Women Delivered Record 1.47M Infants in 2004, Report Says
Unmarried U.S. women gave birth to a record 1.47 million infants in 2004, accounting for 35.7% of all births in the country for the year, according to a preliminary report released on Friday by the National Center for Health Statistics, the AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports (Schmid, AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 10/28). In 2003, single women in the U.S. delivered 1.4 million infants, according to NCHS' final report on 2003 birth data, which was released last month (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 9/12). The increase in the number of births to single women occurred primarily among women in their 20s, specifically between the ages of 25 and 29. Most of the women in that age group are living with partners but are not officially married, NCHS researcher Stephanie Ventura said. She added that the 20s are principal childbearing years, whether women are married or single. The birth rate among women ages 30 and older continued to increase in 2004, according to Brady Hamilton of NCHS, a trend he said shows the decisions women are making about family and career. Teenagers accounted for about 24% of births to single women in 2004, according to Ventura. The birth rate for women ages 15 to 19 was 41.2 per 1,000 women in 2004, a record low. The teen birth rate was 61.8 per 1,000 in 1991 and has been declining since (AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 10/28).
