Washington Insurance Program For Working Poor Lacks Information, Audit Finds, USA
The Washington state Basic Health Plan, which offers reduced-cost health insurance to about 102,400 low income residents, has insufficient information on the effectiveness of its policies and practices, according to an audit, the AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. For example, the state Health Care Authority, which manages the program, lacks data on whether patients are being directed to effective treatments for heart disease and diabetes, the audit found. The audit comes after Republican lawmakers two years ago discovered that many people with Basic Health coverage earned too much to qualify, state Rep. Gary Alexander (R) said. State Rep. Fred Jarrett (R) said, "It tells you, you have a program, and you don't know," adding, "You're not measuring anything." State Sen. Pat Thibaudeau (D) said she was concerned that the program could be held to higher standards in compiling information than others in the health care industry. HCA Deputy Director Barney Speight said the agency was working to adopt some of the audit's recommendations. HCA is expected to send comments to a January meeting of the Joint Legislative Review and Audit Committee (AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 12/2).
