fpa leaflet provides new advice on missed contraceptive pills, UK

Sexual health charity The Family Planning Association (fpa) has issued an updated leaflet on the combined oral contraceptive pill which contains new information about what women should do when they miss taking pills.

Studies show 47% of women forget at least one pill per cycle, and 22% forget at least two*. The new advice clarifies the information women need to avoid an unplanned pregnancy and is based on recommendations from the World Health Organisation.

Toni Belfield, Director of Information at fpa, said: "This new advice is clear and simple. Missing one pill anywhere in your pack, or starting a new pack one day late, will not increase your risk of unplanned pregnancy. A missed pill is now defined as one which is 24 hours late, but depending on which type you take, missing more than one may affect your contraceptive cover."

The leaflet also includes new guidance on how other medicines, sickness or diarrhoea may make the Pill less effective, when the Pill can be started during a woman's menstrual cycle, and revised information relating to the risks of breast and cervical cancer.

"The content of the leaflet reflects the kind of questions we get everyday on fpa's national helpline," said Toni. "There's still a lot of confusion out there about the Pill, but this new leaflet will help women make an informed choice about their contraception."

Single copies are available by calling fpa's helpline on 0845 310 1334 Mon-Fri 9am-6pm. The helpline was recently awarded the Telephone Helpline Association's Quality Mark.

For further information contact fpa's press office on 020 7923 5202/5201 or mobile 07958 921 060.
