'Compromise' Prescription Drug Reimportation Bills Likely, Los Angeles Times Editorial States
The "thick political wall" that pharmaceutical companies have established around US medication prices "is showing cracks" after former.... FDA Commissioner David Kessler on Tuesday testified at a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing that prescription drug reimportation "can't be stopped," according to a Los Angeles Times editorial. However, a "crack in the wall is not a collapse," and those who have opposed legislation to legalize reimportation -- such as a number of congressional Republicans -- or called for more study of the practice -- such as President Bush -- "now may go to a fallback, pressing for 'compromise' bills designed to be narrow and ineffective," the editorial states. In addition, although reimportation legislation has the support of a number of lawmakers, such bills "seldom come to a vote at all" in Congress, the editorial states. However, the editorial states, reimportation legislation likely would pass if congressional leaders allowed a vote. The editorial adds, "If House leaders decline to pack a final House-Senate conference committee with importation enemies," a "good final bill will be sent to the president's desk," and Bush likely would not issue the first veto of his presidency to "keep drug prices high." According to the editorial, the legalization of reimportation likely would lead to reduced prescription drug prices, and pharmaceutical companies would "have to figure out the premium that U.S. consumers would be willing (not forced) to pay for the convenience of buying American" (Los Angeles Times, 4/22).
