'Diane Rehm Show' Discusses State Laws Restricting Abortion, Contraceptive Access in U.S.
WAMU's... "The Diane Rehm Show," an NPR-syndicated program, on Wednesday included a discussion of state laws passed this year that impose new restrictions on access to abortion or contraception. According to host Diane Rehm, the "ideological battle" over abortion rights "remains one of the most painful and divisive issues" in the U.S. and state legislatures are "taking the initiative" to limit abortion access (Rehm, "The Diane Rehm Show," WAMU, 8/31). A recent Washington Post article said abortion-rights opponents are using a two-pronged approach that aims to reduce the number of abortions through new restrictions and build a foundation of lower court cases to obtain a high court reversal of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that struck down state abortion bans. In addition, antiabortion groups have successfully pushed through bills to restrict when and where women can receive contraceptive services and abortions and how physicians provide them. Other efforts enacted in some states include "trigger" laws that would immediately ban abortions if Roe were overturned, the provision of funds to encourage women to carry a pregnancy to full term with the possibility of adoption and the addition of criminal charges for harming a fetus during the commission of a crime against a pregnant woman (Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Report, 8/29). Guests on the program included Ceci Connolly, a Post reporter and author of the story; David Bereit, director of program development for the American Life League; and Kate Michelman, former president of NARAL Pro-Choice America ("The Diane Rehm Show," WAMU, 8/31).
