'Huge' Variations In Hospital Charges Examined By Orlando Sentinel
The Orlando Sentinel on Monday examined criticism of "huge" disparities between what hospitals charge patients with health coverage and what they charge the uninsured. Ralph Glatfelter, senior vice president for the Florida Hospital Association, said that the disparities are "a byproduct of 40 years of federal policy on Medicare that probably needs to be revamped. But it's a legal policy that hospitals follow." Keith Eggert, vice president for revenue management at Orlando Regional Healthcare, said hospital pricing makes sense as far as bringing in enough revenue to cover the cost of doing business. "But we've lost that relationship at the (individual) item level," Eggert said. Eggert added that hospital price transparency will occur within two years, which will require resetting prices on about 28,000 items to reflect their true costs (Wessel, Orlando Sentinel, 3/12).
