"Lose Weight Gain Life": New Website For Patients Seeking Information On Obesity Surgery, UK

Today saw the launch of a new disease awareness website http://www.loseweightgainlife.co.uk from Allergan as part of its ongoing commitment to raise awareness of obesity as a serious medical condition and offer clear information and support to patients considering bariatric surgery.

'Lose Weight Gain Life' has been developed following extensive patient research and offers user friendly information for patients considering safe and effective surgical intervention procedures such as the non-surgical BIB™ System intragastric balloon, and surgical options such as the LAP-BAND AP™ System and gastric bypass. The website also provides a unique clinic locator tool, for patients to find further information about specialist clinics and bariatric surgeons specialised in obesity surgery in their local area.

"It's interesting that people are performing more than 1,500 Google searches per month on gastric banding procedures in the UK alone, which demonstrates a huge desire for information about effective surgical treatments for obesity. However a lot of the information relating to obesity surgery on the internet is misleading or confusing. Lose Weight Gain Life helps to navigate through this minefield and provide clear, balanced information on surgical obesity intervention procedures available today", says Mr Paul Leeder, Consultant General Upper Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgeon at the Nuffield Hospital, Derby.

Recent survey data[i] shows widespread confusion over the causes of obesity in the UK, with nearly 8 in 10 people (79%) believing the condition is caused purely by 'lifestyle choices' and 50% also associating it with 'greediness'.

The survey also brings to light some of the stigma associated with obesity. Half of the people surveyed admitted to having made fun of someone who is overweight. Overall nearly 1 in 5 UK men and women also admitted they have discriminated against an overweight or obese person.

In terms of general consumer attitudes towards obesity, the survey revealed a broad acceptance to obesity surgery among the general public, with 53% of Britons agreeing that surgical interventions for obesity should be available on the National Health Service. A further 39% acknowledged the procedure could be a 'life changing' experience.

Obesity is responsible for 9,000 premature deaths each year in England. According to National Audit figures, one million fewer obese people in England could lead to:

- Around 15,000 fewer people with coronary heart disease,
- 34,000 fewer people developing type 2 diabetes, and
- 99,000 fewer people with high blood pressure.[ii]

Interestingly in the Allergan survey, 15% of people didn't associate diabetes with either obesity or heart disease despite the well established co-morbidity relationship.

"Over the last 20 years, surgical interventions, such as the LAP-BAND™ AP, have proven to be an effective method for helping people to lose weight and to maintain this weight loss. In turn, weight loss improves co-morbid conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and hypertension and reducing the use of medication to treat those conditions. Allergan is actively pursuing the development of next generation products that will help people to achieve their long-term weight-loss goals" said Dr Antony Fulford-Smith, Medical Director at Allergan.

As with any obesity therapy, a multidisciplinary team approach is necessary for best results. Both the LAP BANDTM AP and BIBTM System are an aid to weight loss and must be used in conjunction with a nutritional plan and exercise programme to help maintain weight loss. An experienced team of surgeons, nutritionists, psychologists and exercise trainers are involved in keeping patients motivated and focused on reaching and maintaining their weight-loss goals.
