'Shameless' Parenting Not The Norm For Vulnerable And Single Parents, Says NCH, UK
"The Conservative Party's growing understanding and concern for those trapped in the cycle of poverty and poor parenting is welcome. The change in attitude to lone parents shows their commitment to change.
"However any use of negative labels, to describe vulnerable parents risks stigmatising and isolating those most in need. Chris Grayling's use of the 'Shameless' analogy shows these negative attitudes are still widespread.
"Focus on providing intensive family support combining tough challenges and support should address the wider issues of confidence and lack of skills. Our own research shows that whilst 85% of adults agreed parents find Sure Start Children's Centres beneficial[1][1] the fear of being labelled a bad parent deters them from seeking help - perpetuating the problem of repeating bad parenting skills across the generations.
"Long term poverty issues cannot be broken by taking away financial benefits in isolation. Robust support networks and education need to be implemented as part of a holistic approach to change.
"It is time to move on from labelling and punishing parents to providing proper support"
