The American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF), one of the nation's oldest medical associations, will hold its 111th Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO in Washington, DC from September 16 - 19, 2007.

The 2007 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO is the world's largest gathering of otolaryngologists and also a forum for renowned guests. The Neel Distinguished Research Lecture will be presented by Elias Zerhouni, MD, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The lecture will focus on the state of research and the perceptions and reality of research opportunities for otolaryngologists. Dr. Zerhouni oversees NIH's 27 institutes and centers with more than 18,000 employees and a yearly budget of nearly $29 billion. More than 83 percent of NIH's budget supports research in 50 states, the territories, and in more than 90 countries around the world.

The Women in Otolaryngology committee will also host a live teleconference with Jeffrey Sachs, PhD, director of the Earth Institute and co-founder of Millennium Promise Alliance, whose goals surround the elimination of extreme poverty, hunger, and disease in impoverished countries. Dr. Sachs is the only academic to have been repeatedly ranked among the world's most influential people by Time magazine.

With more than 165 scientific research sessions, 200 scientific posters, and 400 instruction course hours for attendees to be presented at the Washington DC Convention Center and surrounding hotels, the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO will provide a rich resource for journalists looking to cover the latest in clinical, surgical, and medical research fields.

During the meeting, experts from around the world will address current events and explore new research regarding sinusitis, hearing loss, ear infections, voice disorders, vertigo and loss of balance, and sleep disorders. Additionally, there will be research findings regarding the efficacy of plastic surgery, as well as treatment for head and neck cancer, one of the most deadly manifestations of cancer. Among the many symposia and research papers to be presented at the meeting are:

- Cell Phones and Hearing Loss
- Cochlear Implants and Effects on Language Development in Children
- Correlations Between Thyroid Cancer and Race
