5% Of Hospital Admissions Among Adults Aged 35 And Over Are Due To Smoking, New Figures Reveal, UK

One in 20 English hospital admissions for those aged 35 and over in 2006/7 were attributable to smoking, a report by The NHS Information Centre shows today.

Figures included for the first time in the annual report, Statistics on Smoking, England, show there were an estimated 445,100 admissions for such diseases, including:

-- 163,200 admissions with a primary diagnosis of cancer.
-- 139,600 admissions with a primary diagnosis of circulatory diseases.
-- 107,600 admissions with a primary diagnosis of respiratory diseases.

The report, which brings together information about smoking from several sources, also shows that in 2007, approximately 18 per cent (82,900) of all deaths of those aged 35 and over were attributable to smoking. This is 14 per cent less (13,800) than in 2001. Of those deaths in 2007:

-- Around 37,200 deaths were caused by cancer.
-- Around 22,300 deaths were from respiratory diseases.
-- Around 22,000 deaths were for circulatory diseases.
-- Around 1,400 deaths were from diseases of the digestive system.

The report is published on the same day as Statistics on NHS Stop Smoking Services in England, April to June 2008 (Quarter 1), which shows 134,149 people set a quit date through NHS Stop Smoking Services during the period of April to June 2008.

This is a 22 per cent (37,043) decrease compared to the same period in 2007/08, which ended directly before the introduction of the smoking ban in public places in England on July 1 2007, and a three per cent decrease (3,654) compared to the same period in 2006/7.

The report also shows that for the period April to June 2008:

-- Of those setting a quit date, 65,334 successfully quit by the four week follow-up, compared to 86,781 during the same period in 2007/8, and 68,901 during the same period in 2006/7

-- Total expenditure on NHS Stop Smoking Services (excluding pharmacotherapies) was £16 million, compared to £13 million during the same period in 2007/8 and £12 million during the same period in 2006/7.

NHS Information Centre Chief Executive Tim Straughan said: "It is shocking that one of every 20 hospital admissions is estimated to be directly attributed to smoking. Clearly England's relationship with cigarettes has a significant impact on our hospitals."

1 - The NHS Information Centre is England's authoritative, independent source of health and social care information. It works with more than 300 health and social care providers nationwide to provide the facts and figures that help the NHS and social services run effectively. Its role is to collect data, analyse it and convert it into useful information which helps providers improve their services and supports academics, researchers, regulators and policymakers in their work. The NHS Information Centre also produces a wide range of statistical publications each year across a number of areas including: primary care, health and lifestyles, screening, hospital care, population and geography, social care and workforce and pay statistics.

2 - Regional information is available from both reports.

3 - Statistics on smoking: England, 2008, presents a range of information on smoking drawn together from a variety of sources. The report aims to present a broad picture of health issues relating to smoking in England and covers topics such as smoking habits, behaviours and attitudes among adults and school children, smoking-related ill health and mortality and smoking-related costs. The report also summarises Government plans and targets in this area, as well as providing sources of further information and links to relevant documents. It combines data from different sources presenting it in a user-friendly format. It contains data and information previously published by the NHS Information Centre, Department of Health, the Office for National Statistics and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

The report also includes new analysis carried out by the NHS Information Centre. England level analysis of the 2006 General Household Survey is presented. NHS hospital admissions for adults aged 35 and over for diseases that can be caused by smoking are being presented for the first time in this publication going back to 1996/1997. Due to a slight revision in methodology, an equivalent time series is not available for admissions directly attributable to smoking.

The age group "35 and over" is used for this report as research suggests 35 as the earliest age of which smoking can be directly attributed to causing disease.

4 - Statistics on NHS Stop Smoking Services in England, April to June 2008, presents provisional results from the monitoring of the NHS Stop Smoking Services (NHS SSS) in England during the period April to June 2008. This report includes information on the number of people setting a quit date and the number who successfully quit at the four week follow-up. It also presents a more in depth analyses of the key measures of the service, including pregnant women, breakdowns by ethnic groups and type of pharamcotherapy received and regional analyses at Strategic Health Authority (SHA) and Primary Care Trust (PCT) levels.

This is the first quarterly report on NHS Stop Smoking Services data using aggregated PCT level returns on NHS Stop Smoking Services activity records. This can be analysed to produce a much wider variety of statistics about patterns of service use than have previously been available from SHA aggregate returns. Much of the information previously only available at a national level is now available for each SHA.
