72% of British have breakfast at home
Despite our increasingly hectic lifestyles, nearly three quarters of Great Britain's population (72 per cent) are still
taking time out to tuck into breakfast in the comfort of their homes. New statistics also dispel the myth that we are
skipping the most important meal of the day. Only nine per cent of people miss out on breakfast and just three per cent grab
theirs on the run - despite the range of breakfast bars and snacks on offer "to go".
These surprising insights are revealed in an NOP survey commissioned by Cancer Research UK to launch Britain's Biggest
Breakfast - a fundraising campaign encouraging people to hold healthy breakfast parties throughout March.
Although cereal and porridge top the poll of favourite breakfast fare (72 per cent), closely followed by tea and toast (63% &
65% respectively) people are taking the five-a-day message to heart, with just under half (45 per cent) kick-starting their
daily quota with a fruit juice or smoothie and 44 per cent tucking into a piece of fruit.
Professor Jane Wardle, Director of Cancer Research UK's Health Behaviour Unit says: "The fact that so many of us are sitting
down to breakfast is excellent news and these results are certainly encouraging. A balanced diet that includes lots of fresh
fruit and vegetables, as well as plenty of fibre, can make a real difference in preventing many cancers, so starting the day
with a nourishing breakfast is a good step towards better health."
"As so many of us are sitting down to breakfast, I hope people will take the opportunity to get together with friends and
colleagues and be a part of Britain's Biggest Breakfast by holding a breakfast party. It's a great way to start the day and
raise vital raise funds for Cancer Research UK."
Britain's Biggest Breakfast is now in its seventh year and aims to raise over 400,000 in 2005 for research into the
prevention, treatment and cure of cancer. To find out more about taking part, visit http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/breakfast or call the
