88% of Catholic Physicians Would Prescribe Birth Control for Adult Patients, Survey Says

About 93% of physicians, including 88% of Catholic physicians, say they would "prescribe birth control to any adult patients that request them and for whom they are medically appropriate," according to a national survey released last month, the... RNS/Charlotte Observer reports. Researchers from Flemington, N.J.-based HCD Research and Allentown, Pa.-based Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion conducted the survey April 21 to 23 and interviewed 1,536 U.S. physicians, 327 of whom described themselves as Catholic. About 93% of the 341 Protestant doctors and 97% of the 342 Jewish doctors in the survey also supported using birth control (Gamache, RNS/Charlotte Observer, 5/7). Among Catholic respondents, about 90% said they supported the distribution of condoms in developing countries to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS, compared with 93% of non-Catholic physicians (HCD release, 4/25). However, Catholic physicians differed from their colleagues in their approval of human embryonic stem cell research. About 49% of all physicians surveyed expressed support for the research, but only 27% of Catholic doctors surveyed said they approved of the research, according to RNS/Observer. However, 79% of Catholic physicians and 83% of all physicians surveyed approved of research using stem cells obtained from placentas or umbilical cords, the survey showed (RNS/Charlotte Observer, 5/7). The margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 3% with a confidence level of 95% (HCD release, 4/25). Reaction
The survey shows the "extent to which some U.S. Catholics have bypassed church teaching" regarding contraception "in favor of following their own consciences," according to RNS/Observer. However, Dr. Francis Dennehy, a Catholic physician at Front Royal Family Practice in Front Royal, Va., said the survey shows that about 13% of Catholic physicians "do follow church teaching" by refusing to prescribe contraceptives, which he thinks is a higher percentage than a "few years ago," RNS/Observer reports. Dennehy, who himself will not prescribe birth control under any circumstances, said he feels "comfortable" advising against these methods from a "medical and moral standpoint," according to RNS/Observer. "There is no doubt that natural family planning is more effective than the majority of methods of contraception that people discuss," he said. Dr. Albert Thomas, director of family planning at Mount Sinai Medical Center and a Catholic OB/GYN, disagreed, saying it is "unethical" for doctors not to give patients scientifically accurate information, RNS/Observer reports. "There is a moral obligation for all physicians to be informed about all of the different methods of contraception and to refer patients away in cases of personal bias," he said, adding, "They're spreading myth, and they're misguiding patients." Thomas also said, "It's morally wrong not to allow those at risk of HIV infection to use condoms" (RNS/Charlotte Observer, 5/7).
