AMA Calls On House To Quickly Pass CHAMP Act
"The parents of America's children who rely on SCHIP should not have to spend the last month of summer worrying if their kids will still have health care in the fall. It is critical that the House send a strong message to these families that Congress will renew SCHIP by passing the CHAMP Act this week.
"Seniors also should not have to worry that their access to health care will be hurt by steep government payment cuts to doctors caring for Medicare patients. A full 60 percent of physicians tell the AMA that next year's harsh 10 percent payment cut will force them to limit the number of new Medicare patients they can treat. House passage of the CHAMP Act is a vital step toward stopping Medicare physician payment cuts for the next two years and providing physicians with a positive payment update.
"By paying for the renewal of SCHIP with an increase in the tobacco tax, the bill has the added health benefit of helping to deter people from smoking. Studies show that for every 10 percent increase in the price of cigarettes, youth smoking is reduced by seven percent, and overall consumption by four percent.
"The bill also eliminates hefty government overpayments to private insurance companies providing Medicare Advantage plans. Congress needs to do what's right for seniors by stopping harsh Medicare cuts to physicians that will make it very hard for physicians to care for new Medicare patients. The most viable way to do that is to level the playing field by eliminating the Medicare Advantage overpayment."
