AMSA Applauds PM For Clinical Training Model, Australia
AMSA National President Rob Mitchell said, "This is certainly a positive move. Over the next five years Australia will see a doubling in the number of medical trainees; it is imperative we look at innovative new ways of building training capacity within our system. There is no doubt that increased investment in the private sector is required if we are to maintain high quality standards in medical education."
Mr Mitchell stressed the importance of the process of community consultation and education when introducing a training centre such as this. "The establishment of clinical schools in private hospitals must be done in concert with consumers. Patients must be informed about the role of medical students within the hospital itself, and the limitations of their involvement as part of the medical team."
Mr. Mitchell maintained there were clear benefits for the community. "The presence of medical students and junior doctors helps establish an academic culture, and a commitment to the highest standards of care.
This is in the best of interests of patients, students and doctors."
Mr Mitchell said there were some good existing models for private hospital contribution to medical education and training in a number of states. The Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, through an arrangement with the University of Melbourne, provides one such example.
"I congratulate the Prime Minister on investing in the future of Australia's healthcare professionals. Establishing new and innovative clinical school models is essential if we are to maintain the highest standards of quality in Australian medical education and training.
