Ada Parry And Dr Samuel Heard Recognised With The Standing Strong Together Award In Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Health, Australia

Ms Ada Parry, a cultural educator from Darwin, Northern Territory, and Dr Samuel Heard, a GP from Rapid Creek, Northern Territory, have been awarded with The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners' (RACGP) Standing Strong Together Award in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health.

The Standing Strong Together Award is made jointly by the RACGP and the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO). The award recognises achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health by a Fellow or member of the RACGP and an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who have worked in an effective partnership to produce substantial, positive outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

Presenting the award tonight at the RACGP Academic Session, during the Wonca Asia Pacific Regional Conference/RACGP Annual Scientific Convention (ASC) 2008, held at Melbourne Town Hall, Dr Vasantha Preetham congratulated Ms Ada Parry, and Dr Samuel Heard and thanked them for their outstanding service to the college, to general practice and to the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Ms Parry and Dr Heard were both based at the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin when they started working together in 1993. At the time Dr Heard became the regional director of the RACGP Training Program in the Northern Territory and employed Ms Parry as a Cultural Educator to provide cross cultural training for medical students and GP registrars.

"The dedication shown by Ms Parry and Dr Heard in tackling some of Australia's greatest health challenges is inspirational. In forging a partnership they have managed to bridge cultural gaps to work together towards a better future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health," said Dr Vasantha Preetham, outgoing RACGP President.

"Ms Parry and Dr Heard both embody Australia's 'fair go' ethos. Their work has been focused on providing disadvantaged people with access to health services. They have been dedicated to building on the education received by medical students to ensure that future doctors are prepared to face the challenges of working in disadvantaged communities. They are both inspirational mentors for young doctors in the Northern Territory," said Dr Preetham.

The winners of the Standing Strong Together Award each receive an educational scholarship worth $2500, which provides an educational opportunity for the recipients or to continue their work.
