American College Of Physicians To Offer Health Information Technology Training Course

The American College of Physicians (ACP), announced today that it will offer a health information technology (HIT) training course in conjunction with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). The 15-week online curriculum includes a day of in-person training to be held as a pre-session course at ACP's Internal Medicine 2007 meeting.

The course will be part of AMIA's 10X10 program, which has the goal of training 10,000 health care professionals in applied health and medical informatics by 2010. OHSU was selected in mid-2005 as AMIA's first partner in the 10X10 program with a program in biomedical informatics. Since the OHSU course was first offered in 2005, nearly 200 people have completed it.

ACP's course offering will use the curriculum developed by OHSU. The Web-based portion is provided through readings, lectures, interactive discussion, and self-assessment tests. The in-person session will bring attendees together to:

-- integrate the material,
-- allow presentation of course projects, and
-- meet leaders in the field and other students.

Recent analysis found that although the benefits of using health information technology (HIT) to improve quality, safety, and costs of health care are well-documented, they have been demonstrated in only a small number of institutions (Chaudhry et al., Annals of Internal Medicine, 2006). Among the barriers to the use of HIT is the lack of a well-trained workforce to develop and implement systems. The analysis found that such systems are not implemented by merely installing software on computers, but require major institutional commitment and planning to carry out successfully.

The AMIA 10X10 ACP course begins with the online sessions on Jan. 3, 2007. The in-person course will be Wed., April 18 in San Diego at Internal Medicine 2007. The registration deadline is Jan. 3. For further information about the course, or for registration materials, please visit: www.amia.org/10x10/partners/acp.

The American College of Physicians is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. ACP members include 120,000 internal medicine physicians (internists), related subspecialists, and medical students. Internists specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illness in adults.
