American Nephrology Nurses' Association (ANNA) Symposium To Highlight Innovative Approaches In Patient Care

The American Nephrology Nurses' Association (ANNA) will hold its 39th National Symposium April 27-30, 2008, in Philadelphia, PA, at the Philadelphia Marriott and Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Education sessions span the nephrology nursing specialty and will be presented by the industry's leading experts. The latest advances and treatment innovations will be explored and are reflected in the conference theme: "Evidence and Nursing Informatics to Improve Safety and Outcomes."

Nephrology nurses and health care providers at every level will learn the latest information and treatment advances. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn continuing nursing education credits, network with colleagues, visit the exhibit hall and attend special events.

Topics include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and other treatment modalities; bioethics, sleep disorders, cultural challenges, leadership development and much more.

Program

There are five preconference workshops on Sunday, April 27. Topics are serial markers and patient care; cutaneous manifestations in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients; Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) conditions of participation for end stage renal disease (ESRD); fostering an environment for effective leadership development; and nurses and the political process. There is also a certification review course that can be used as a refresher or to help prepare for certification as a Certified Nephrology Nurse (CNN) or Certified Dialysis Nurse (CDN).

After the preconferences, ANNA President Sandra Bodin, MA, RN, CNN, will officially launch the symposium during the evening's Opening Ceremonies. Faith Roberts, BSN, will present the first general session, "Keeping a Professional Presence in Times of Change," and will explore how to apply the core values of care and competence to daily practice.

On Monday, April 28, Arthur Caplan, PhD, will deliver the Janel Parker Memorial Keynote Address. Dr. Caplan, who is a renowned bioethicist, will discuss today's most urgent bioethical issues, such as organ transplantation, gene therapy and human experimentation.

Concurrent sessions run from Monday, April 28, to Wednesday, April 30. Topics include:

- Informatics in the care of CKD patients
- Use of evidence-based research to improve care outcomes
- Sleep disorders in patients with CKD
- Hemolytic uremic syndrome
- Diagnostic tools for peripheral arterial disease
- Diagnosing and intervening with challenging patients
- Depression in chronically ill patients
- The latest handheld technology tools in health care
- Immunization update and CDC recommendations

On Wednesday, April 25, there will be an optional postconference workshop, "A Revolutionary Approach to Hypertension Management: Improving the Health of the Vasculature." Barry Eppinger, DO, will discuss a new approach to treating hypertension using lifestyle, nutrition and pharmacologic intervention.

Special Events

On Saturday, April 26, Genzyme will sponsor a Dinner Symposium at 6 p.m. Following that event, Abbott is sponsoring the First Night Mixer, an informal get-together for participants to network and enjoy refreshments.

Abbott is also sponsoring a Lunch Symposium on Sunday, April 27, from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. for preconference workshop participants. Later that day, ANNA will sponsor a First-time Attendees and New Members Welcome Discussion. In the evening, ANNA will welcome all symposium registrants to ANNA's Big Event - Dance Party featuring The Fabulous Greaseband, a seven-member group who will play favorite dance hits of the past.

On Tuesday April 29, Amgen will host a Breakfast Symposium from 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Later that day, ANNA will continue its tradition of honoring the accomplishments of ANNA and nephrology nurses during the past year at the Nephrology Nurse Day Recognition Luncheon. The 2008-09 ANNA Board of Directors will assume their elected positions, special awards will be presented, and President Bodin will pass ANNA's "Vision Crystal" to incoming President Sue Cary, MN, APRN, NP, CNN.

On Wednesday, April 30, Watson Pharma, Inc. will sponsor a Breakfast Symposium from 7:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

Continuing Education Information

Up to 29 contact hours may be earned for the symposium (including corporate-sponsored meal symposia and networking sessions), with additional credits available for the preconference and postconference workshops. Advanced practice nurses may earn pharmacology credit that can be applied toward pharmacology credit requirements.

ANNA is an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center-Commission on Accreditation (ANCC-COA).

NNCC Certification Exam Offered

The Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC) will be offering the Certified Nephrology Nurse (CNN) Examination, the Certified Dialysis Nurse (CDN) Examination, the Certified Nephrology Nurse-Nurse Practitioner (CNN-NP) Examination, and the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) Examination on Saturday, April 26, from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Separate registration fees and forms are required for each exam.
