Angola Reports 30,612 Cases Of Cholera And 1,156 Deaths In Under Three Months

Authorities in Angola say that from 19 February to 8 May, 30,612 people have become infected with cholera, of which 1,156 have died (case fatality rate 4%). Half of all cases took place in Luanda province, one quarter in Benguela province, 10% in Malanje and Kuanza Norte provinces.

The outbreak is still spreading, but seems to have peaked about three weeks ago.

A provincial task force, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Red Cross and Red Crescent, MSF (Spain, Holland, France and Switzerland) and Médecins du Monde has been established.

The World Health Organization has provided 7 tons of emergency supplies, as well as an epidemiologist, a public health specialist and a sanitation and water engineer.
