BCBSA Employee Wellness Programs In Three States Examined
Detroit Free Press: The Blue Care Network of Michigan since October 2006 has offered health plans with rewards for employees who have healthy lifestyles, the Free Press reports. Under the Healthy Blue Living program, employees have 90 days to visit a physician and complete a questionnaire about six health risk factors: smoking status, alcohol moderation, weight reduction, and management of blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Employees who have healthy lifestyles receive lower copayments, gift cards, diet and fitness program discounts, cash and other rewards. About 200 Michigan employers participate in the program (Anstett, Detroit Free Press, 3/20).
St. Paul Pioneer Press: BlueCross BlueShield of Minnesota on Monday asked employers with as many as 1,000 employees to submit proposals to improve the health of employees, the Pioneer Press reports. BCBSM later this year will select as many as 20 employers to receive three-year contracts that range in value from $25,000 to $100,000, based on the size of the company, to implement their proposals. The BCBSM Workplaces on the Move initiative is part of an effort "to tackle preventable heart disease and cancer by addressing their root causes," the Pioneer Press reports. BCBSM will finance the contracts with funds from the 1998 national tobacco settlement (Forster, St. Paul Pioneer Press, 3/20).
Winston-Salem Journal: BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina this summer will begin to offer a program that allows employers to design wellness programs for employees based on surveys, the Journal reports. Five employers have enrolled in the program, called "Your Health Profile," and others will begin to enroll this summer. Under the program, employees complete surveys about their physical activities, dietary habits, medical history and tobacco use. Employers submit the surveys to BCBSNC officials, who will provide companies with a "snapshot" of employee health and recommendations for wellness programs, according to BCBSNC spokesperson Kyle Marshall (Jackson, Winston-Salem Journal, 3/20).
