Boston Globe Examines Effect Of Massachusetts Reform Package On Hospital Revenue
The Boston Globe on Wednesday looked at how "a bill designed to expand health care coverage to the uninsured has turned into ... a financial bonanza for some of Boston's major hospitals." According to the Globe, a House proposal to increase Medicaid reimbursement rates would add $270 million in provider revenue by the third year of the proposed law, while a Senate plan would add about $540 million within three years, with the costs split by state and federal governments. A "good chunk of that extra revenue" would go to Boston's teaching hospitals, which recently have "made huge profits," the Globe reports. The hospitals maintain that costs of care are not covered by Medicaid reimbursements, while critics argue that the funds included in the bill "dwar[f] the money for expanding health coverage and reduces critical funding for some of the state's struggling community hospitals," according to the Globe (Phillips, Boston Globe, 3/29).
