Boston Globe Op-Eds Examine Conflict-of-Interest Policies At Medical Journals, FDA

The Boston Globe on Thursday published two opinion pieces on conflict-of-interest policies regarding medical journal articles and FDA advisory panels. Summaries appear below.Jerome Kassirer: "Behind the public outcry for disclosure" of potential conflicts of interest in journal articles and FDA advisory panels "is a serious misconception, namely that disclosing financial connections solves the problem of conflict of interest and bias," Kassirer, a professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and former editor in chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, writes in a Globe opinion piece. He states, "Unfortunately, it does not." Kassirer writes that uncertainty regarding scientists' potential biases "underlines the problem of interpreting disclosures of conflict of interest: It leaves us guessing about what to believe." Therefore, disclosure "is nothing more than an excuse to continue business as usual," he states. Kassirer continues, "We must find ways of rewarding academic physicians who decide that patient care and personal integrity is more important than a $10,000 infusion into their bank accounts. One cure is to reward physicians by recruiting those without financial ties to write the review articles and to serve on panels" (Kassirer, Boston Globe, 7/27).

David Shaywitz: The argument that "drug company money will bias the conclusions of otherwise trustworthy university scientists" is a "dangerous sham -- a sham because it derives from a naïve preconception about the purity of academic scientists, and dangerous, because by discouraging collaborations between researchers from university and industry, we will slow the pace of medical progress," Shaywitz, an endocrinologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, writes in a Globe opinion piece. Shaywitz writes that "the newfound obsession with financial conflicts of interest obscures ... other, often more compelling pressures on university researchers," such as the pressure to produce "attention-getting results." Shaywitz concludes, "Coming up with novel treatments for dreadful diseases is a difficult enough task under the best of circumstances; let's not complicate this mission further by misjudging either the intrinsic virtue of academic scientists or the alleged venality of drug companies; instead, let us learn how to foster productive, transparent collaborations so that the promise of modern science can be realized in the treatment of our patients" (Shaywitz, Boston Globe, 7/27).
