Breast cancer tests should be offered to a small proportion of women, NICE, UK

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), the UK's drug use watchdog, has given its backing for selective breast cancer tests. NICE issued new guidelines designed to identify women at risk of hereditary breast cancer and to care for them. NICE also added that the majority of women who had a family history of breast cancer were not at high risk of developing the disease.

NICE added that genetic testing for hereditary cancer should be offered only to women from high risk families - a tiny percentage of the population.

Women who have the mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have a much higher risk of developing breast cancer. Modern technology allows us to test for these mutations.

If a woman is found to have these mutations she is faced with some difficult choices. One of the choices could be to have a masectomy (breast removal) even though she does not have breast cancer when she decides to have it done, this would prevent her from developing breast cancer.

Doctors say that it is very unusual to find a situation in which a woman is advised to have her breasts removed to protect her from breast cancer - but the situation can arise.

The NICE guidelines explains when this advice is recommended. The guidelines will become standard practice throughout the National Health Service, UK.
