British Dental Association statement in response to Today programme report

The BDA believes there should be greater emphasis on oral health education. Good oral health education starts at a young age, with both parents and schools having an important part to play. Parents must teach their children how to brush their teeth and make sure they do it twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. However, in many cases, parents haven't been taught this simple lesson themselves, creating a downward spiral of poor oral care. Schools can also help ensuring children have access to healthy drinks and food.

Professor Liz Kay, chair of the BDA's Health & Science Committee, said:

"Sadly even the simplest messages are not getting through. Putting sugary drinks into babies' bottles and teething cups may placate them in the short term, but it stores up tears and tantrums in the longer-term as children's teeth become decayed and painful. I see children of five-years-old and even younger coming into hospital to have teeth removed under general anaesthetic. In a so-called civilised country in the 21st century, that's simply unacceptable."

Many communities could also benefit from the addition of fluoride into their drinking water, a measure for which the BDA successfully campaigned last year, securing an amendment to the Water Act 2003. Targeted water fluoridation is the single most effective public health measure against tooth decay and could go a long way to narrow oral health inequalities.

Notes to editors:

1. The British Dental Association is the trade union and professional association for dentists practicing in the UK, representing 20,000 members working in all aspects of dentistry.

2. The BDA successfully campaigned for communities to be given the right to decide for themselves whether they wish their water supplies to be fluoridated. The House of Commons passed the Water Act on November 10th 2003. This Act gives communities the chance to decide for themselves whether they wish their water supplies to be fluoridated if they are not already.
