Britons top Christmas drinking poll
Alcohol consumption in the UK goes up by 41 per cent more than the annual monthly average in December, more than any other G7 nation.
Statistics compiled by the Right-wing Policy Exchange Think Tank revealed that the holiday season is also accompanied by higher than normal rates of murder, burglaries and drink-driving, but lower suicide rates than the rest of the year.
The researchers compared changes in British behaviour during December with changes in the other G7 industrial countries (USA, Japan, Germany, France, Italy and Canada).
Only Germans drink more wine, beer and spirits in December than the British, with the average German consuming 1.2 litres of pure alcohol per person, compared to the average Briton's 1.02 litres.
While drink-drive deaths increase across Europe and America in December, Britain has the lowest death rate from drink-driving and the lowest increase in December fatalities.
Suicide rates in England are at the lowest level ever recorded, the Department of Health announced this week.
