Cardiovascular Imaging Made Easy With Automation

At this week's meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Chicago, GE Healthcare is launching a solution capable of assessing the coronary arteries and cardiovascular function automatically, dramatically improving overall workflow when reviewing cardiac CT images.

The two latest advanced CT applications for the Advantage Workstation, CardIQ Xpress 2.0 and CardIQ Function Xpress, give clinicians non-invasive alternatives to evaluate coronary arteries, heart function and help diagnose heart disease.

CardIQ Xpress 2.0 offers immediate image reconstruction so a cardiologist can get results in seconds, not minutes. "It is like having a 3D technologist in your workstation," said DeAnn Haas, Cardiovascular Manager for GE's Global CT business. "Now the cardiologist can just sit down and read the exam, dedicating more time to patient care." Automated coronary vessel tracking allows for extracting and displaying coronary arteries with 93% or greater accuracy. Of the many newly enhanced features, the IVUS-like view and relative perfusion give the physician additional information including myocardial tissue and plaque analysis to help aid in the decision to diagnose cardiovascular disease potentially in one exam.

In addition to reviewing the coronary arteries, functional information from a 5-beat cardiac exam just became easier. Automated ejection fraction of the LV, RV and LA including myocardial analysis allows physicians to quickly determine if the heart is functioning properly. This simplicity has improved workflow by up to 75% in some centers.

Another newer application, SmartScore 4.0, simplifies the calcium scoring process by providing an easy assessment of whether or not a patient needs further cardiac evaluation. It combines the benefits of calcium scoring with automatic plaque highlighting to simplify workflow.

"GE has been working with cardiologists in this field for more than eight years, and our application development has evolved all along the way" added Haas. "Those relationships foster customer-driven changes that resulted in automation and simplicity."

This is all made possible with 5-beat cardiac CT and SnapShot Pulse on GE's LightSpeed VCT. SnapShot Pulse enables a prospectively gated diagnostic cardiac CT exam that provides radiation dose exposure reduction by up to 83% and improving image quality.

"Simplifying my reading time while reducing the dose is key to the adoption of CT technology in cardiovascular practices," said Dr. Matt Budoff, UCLA-Harbor preventative cardiologist. "Our site has adopted these new techniques quickly and is especially excited with SnapShot Pulse which brings the dose of a coronary CTA exam close to the dose of a calcium scoring exam."
