Complications From Unsafe Abortions Leading Cause Of Kenyan Emergency Gynecological Hospital Admissions, Study Says

Complications from unsafe abortions are the leading cause of emergency gynecological hospital admissions in Kenya, according to a study recently published in the East African Medical Journal, the East African/AllAfrica.com reports. According to the East African/All Africa.com, abortion is illegal in Kenya, but many women undergo clandestine abortions in unhygienic conditions. For the study, P. M. Ndavi, a lecturer at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Nairobi, and colleagues looked at the records of 400 women who visited the Kakamega Provincial General Hospital in western Kenya for gynecological emergencies. Abortion complications accounted for 43% of all gynecological emergency admissions, compared with 24% for pelvic inflammatory disease, 10% for pelvic abscess and 8% for ectopic pregnancies, the study found. In addition, the study found that patients admitted for abortion complications spent an average of 91 hours in the hospital, compared with an average of 39 hours for women admitted for other gynecological problems. The majority of patients seen at the hospital were young and from rural areas. Another recently released study, conducted at the Kenyatta National Hospital, found that about 60% of all gynecological emergency admissions resulted from unsafe abortions and that 53% of patients receiving treatment for unsafe abortions were girls younger than age 14. A study conducted at the Nyahururu District Hospital in central Kenya, found that abortion complications accounted for up to 87% of emergency gynecological admissions. Researchers for the Kakamega study called for stronger community-based health care and referral systems and better transportation to rural areas to reduce the number of hospital admissions resulting from abortion complications, the East African/All Africa.com reports (Kimani, East African/AllAfrica.com, 4/17).
