Countdown To Discovery Prize Closing Date, Royal College Of General Practitioners
The Discovery Prize recognises outstanding discoveries in General Practice, which have transformed the delivery of health care and improved the well being of patients. Examples include Dr Hope-Simpson's work on establishing the link between chicken pox and shingles, or the work of Michael Balint on the doctor patient relationship.
The inaugural presentation of a medal and certificate will be made to the winner at a ceremony in 2006. The winner will also be asked to give a lecture on their findings to peers attending the presentation.
Nominees may reside anywhere in the world, and be qualified in medicine or allied discipline. The Discovery Prize is also open to non-members of the College.

3. The scoring system for the award will be developed from these six headings:
- The extent of excellence and achievement
- Its value and benefit to general practice
- Its value and benefit to patients and the wider community
- Extent of innovation
- Evidence of acceptance or of widespread uptake within the health community
- Long term or scale of impact
4. The Royal College of General Practitioners is the largest membership organisation in the United Kingdom solely for GPs.
