Creating A "Culture Of Safety" In Healthcare - ECRI Highlights Free Report In Honor Of National Patient Safety Awareness Week

In honor of National Patient Safety Awareness Week, ECRI is offering healthcare providers and the general public expanded access to its Patient Safety Center Web site. The site features free reports on topics including surgical fires, bed rail safety, and more.

During the week of March 5-11, 2006, ECRI encourages healthcare facilities to download its "Culture of Safety" report, posted in the Patient Safety Center. As healthcare facilities nationwide strive to improve patient safety, experts say their adoption of a culture of safety is key. This concept, which requires facilities to define safety attitudes and practices organization-wide, helps employees work toward a well-defined common goal and deliver quality care.

Accompanying the report is ECRI's self-assessment patient safety questionnaire, which can serve as a starting point in improving safety culture. The self-assessment questionnaire can help facilities identify needed improvements in leadership commitment, staff education, event reporting, and environment and technology-all important components of a culture of safety.

The "Culture of Safety" report and questionnaire is one of more than 200 Risk Analyses, guidance articles, audit tools, and education/training resources included in ECRI's Healthcare Risk Control (HRC) System, a comprehensive print and Web resource that covers numerous risk exposures for risk managers and patient safety officers involved in all areas of healthcare, from hospitals and health systems to managed care organizations and integrated delivery systems.
