DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance Praises PFCD Policy Platform

DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance praised the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease for its new, comprehensive policy platform that addresses the crisis of chronic disease through common sense "ideas for change" to improve lives and lower costs.

DMAA is among more than 80 organizations that form the PFCD, a national coalition of patients, providers, community organizations, business and labor groups and health policy experts committed to challenging our nation's leaders--in particular, the 2008 presidential candidates--to refocus our health care system, our public health infrastructure and all other stakeholders on fighting chronic diseases.

"There is no greater need in our health care system today than to put effective, population-based measures in place to prevent and manage chronic conditions," DMAA President and CEO Tracey Moorhead said. "We're proud to have contributed to the PFCD policy platform, which offers a thoughtful and fundamentally sound roadmap for policymakers to battle chronic disease."

Chronic diseases--long-lasting, often preventable and treatable illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and depression--are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States and the chief driver of rising health care costs. Responsible for more than seven in 10 deaths and 75 percent of health spending, chronic diseases exact a huge toll on Americans' health and the U.S. economy.

The new PFCD policy platform has a foundation of "ideas for change" to make a difference in Americans' health and lives. The PFCD believes that any serious plan to help Americans better prevent, detect and treat chronic conditions must:

- Advance sustainable "Next Generation" chronic disease prevention, early intervention and management models throughout the health care system and public health infrastructure.
- Promote healthful lifestyles and disease prevention and management in communities.
- Encourage and reward continuous advances in clinical practice and research that improve the quality of care for those with prevalent and costly chronic diseases.
- Accelerate improvements in the quality and availability of health information technology throughout the health care system.
- Reduce health disparities by focusing on barriers to good health.

DMAA supports these recommendations and encourages any candidate seeking to create a healthier future for all Americans to refer to the PFCD policy platform as a guide for change. An overview of the recommendations, as well as the full policy platform, can be found on the PFCD's Web site, http://www.fightchronicdisease.org.
