Hemo Concepts To Launch Integrated Blood Conservation Program At Texas Heart Institute
The Texas Heart Institute was founded by Dr. Denton A. Cooley in 1962 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the devastating toll of cardiovascular disease through innovative and progressive programs in research, education and improved patient care. Taking a leading role in new areas of medicine is nothing new at the Texas Heart Institute. Speaking recently about the Institute's decision to implement an integrated blood conservation program, Dr. Cooley said, "Blood transfusion can be abused and I believe it is essential that it is used only in appropriate circumstances. Blood conservation is essential to the future of surgery and we have to encourage doctors to follow a conservative (transfusion) policy."
Dr. Arthur Bracey, Medical Director of the Transfusion Service at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, is also the Chairman of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability. In an interview about the impact that integrated blood conservation can have nationally, Dr. Bracey commented, "There is great variation in practice in the use of blood …in cardiac surgery. Inappropriate transfusions can lead to more perioperative complications. There are indeed hazards associated with receiving a blood transfusion …restricting transfusion to when it is needed is in the best interest of the patient. There's only so much blood to go around in the system and we need to really shepherd the inventories to make sure they are used appropriately."
