Idaho Has Low Rate of Cervical Cancer, Low Screening Levels; State Legislature To Examine Testing Promotion

Women in Idaho are 22% less likely than other US women to develop cervical cancer, according to federal statistics compiled by... NIH's National Cancer Institute, the Associated Press reports. However, the state also has the second-lowest screening rate in the country, which health officials worry could lead to a surge in the number of cervical cancer cases because the disease takes between 10 and 20 years to develop. A bipartisan committee of the state Legislature is scheduled to meet this fall to discuss ways to increase screening for cervical cancer, which is done using Pap tests, after the defeat of a 2005 state bill that would have provided federal funding for the tests. "We need greater public awareness that, 'Hey, we are sitting on a time bomb, and we need to start addressing it before we have a huge epidemic of cervical cancer,'" state Rep. Bob Ring (R), who will co-chair the legislative panel, said. The reasons for the lower rates of cervical cancer in Idaho are unknown, according to state epidemiologist Christine Hahn (Associated Press, 8/16). Almost all cervical cancer cases are caused by the sexually transmitted disease human papillomavirus, which more than half of sexually active people in the U.S. contract some time during their lives (Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Report, 8/4). About 4,000 U.S. women die from cervical cancer annually (Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Report, 7/27).
