Investigational Clinical Study Of An Approved Drug In People With Chronic Pain Due To Osteoarthritis Of The Knee Or Hip - Men And Women Sought

Stamford Therapeutics Consortium (STC) is seeking men and women who suffer from moderate to severe chronic knee or hip pain due to osteoarthritis (OA) to participate in a clinical trial. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new investigational form of an approved drug for people with chronic joint pain.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the United States, affecting more than 21 million people. It primarily affects middle-aged and older adults, and is a leading cause of disability. Degeneration of the joint cartilage leads to OA, which usually involves the neck, low back, knees, hips, and fingers. The prevalence of OA in the hip and knee increases progressively with age.

OA is characterized by morning stiffness and pain that typically worsens with activity and weight bearing movements, and it improves with rest. As the disease advances, OA patients experience increasing pain and loss of function, with pain present even during periods of rest. Since no cure for OA is available, the primary goal of any OA treatment is to reduce pain while maintaining or improving joint mobility and limiting functional disability.

To be considered for participation in this research study, you must be at least 21 years old and in generally good health, have OA of the knee or hip that required treatment within the last 3 months, and have moderate or severe chronic OA pain in the knee or hip. Investigators, including STC, will review additional medical criteria with you to determine your eligibility for possible inclusion in the study.

"If you live with debilitating chronic joint pain of the knee or hip, we encourage you to talk to your doctor about clinical trials or contact us for more information on this particular study to see if you are eligible," said Tom Grotta.

This clinical trial will enroll approximately 400 patients at approximately 80 study clinics across the United States. Study participation lasts about 22 weeks after screening and involves up to 17 clinic visits. All study-related office visits, medical evaluations, and study medication will be provided to qualified study participants at no cost.

For more information, or to find out if you may be eligible, please call Stamford Therapeutics Consortium at 203-325-8529.
