Lloyd Sansom Honoured For Life Works, Australia - A Leading Light in Pharmacy For More Than 40 Years
Recognised nationally and internationally as a visionary leader of the profession, Prof. Sansom was honoured as a guiding hand for many significant advances that have taken the profession forward.
'I'm proud to be a pharmacist, always have been, always will be,' Prof. Sansom said.
'It's always been a profession at the forefront of health care delivery and will continue to be so simply because of the commitment of the pharmacists who make up that profession,' he said.
'There is a gene, there is something that intrinsically builds up within the professional ethos of pharmacy, I don't know what it is, I'm just proud to be a pharmacist. People can say at times that I'm outspoken. I make no apologies for that. The profession is only as strong as it is prepared to examine itself.'
Prof. Sansom said the award was a momentous occasion in his professional life, and pledged to continue to be available for the profession and its members. Prof. Sansom first received his Doctor of Philosophy from the Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Adelaide in 1972.
Among his many achievements since then, Prof. Sansom was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2002, in recognition of outstanding, distinguished achievement and service of a high degree to Australia and humanity at large. He is currently Chair of the Federal Government's Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee, a position he has held since 2001. He has been Chair of the Australian Pharmacy Examining Council (APEC) since 1987.
The University of South Australia, made him Emeritus Professor in 2001 after many years of service.
Prof. Sansom was head of the University's School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences from 1995 to 2000, and served as a Professor of Pharmacy there from 1990.
The University recognized Prof. Sansom's huge contributions by naming the Sansom Trust (established 2001) and Sansom Research Institute (2004), in his honour.
In 2006 Newcastle, Griffith and Queensland universities, awarded Prof. Sansom honourary doctorate degrees.
Over the course of his career, Prof. Sansom has received more than 20 major grants and contributed to over 100 scientific publications.
He is Editor of the Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary and Handbook (APF).
