Men have triple the likelihood of recurrence of blood clot in the veins than women

Men are three times more likely to have a recurrence of a blood clot in the veins than women, say Austrian scientists in a new study.

You can read about the risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in The New England Journal of Medicine.

According to the team, led by Dr. Paul Kyrle, the natural course of venous thromboembolism is different in men and women.

The Austrian team monitored 826 people who had experienced an episode of VTE for a period of 36 months. They were treated with oral anti-coagulants. The team excluded high risk people such as pregnant women, active cancer patients and people who had had previous VTE episodes.

20% of men and only 6% of women went on to have another VTE. Five years after the first episode the likelihood of recurrence was 30.7% for men and 8.5% for women.

The researchers say that in order to find out whether women need a shorter period of treatment than men can only be verified after further research is carried out.

WHAT IS VENOUS THROMBOEMBOLISM?

Venous thromboembolism (sometimes called thrombophlebitis) is a term used to describe an inflammation in a vein which is often accompanied by a thrombus (blood clot) forming in a vein. When a blood clot forms in a vein it may partially or completely block the flow of blood in that vein. If this occurs in one of the deep veins in the body it is called a deep venous thrombosis (DVT). The most common sites for blood clots to form are the legs and pelvis, but it can also occur in the arms.

The major danger from a deep venous thrombosis is that the clot or part of it may break off and travel through the blood stream to the heart and lungs. This is called a pulmonary embolism (PE).

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF VENOUS THROMBOEMBOLISM?

Conditions that cause slow or sluggish blood slow in the veins can lead to thrombophlebitis or blood clots forming in the veins:

-- prolonged bed rest or inactivity

-- prolonged car or plane rides

-- recent major surgery - especially knee, hip, and abdominal operations

-- recent major illness

-- pregnancy

-- obesity

-- injury to an arm or a leg

In addition, some people have an increased tendency to form blood clots, including those with certain inherited blood disorders, cancer, and smokers. Women who use birth control pills and smoke ( especially if over age 35) are at higher risk for forming blood clots.
