NCQA Seeks To Provide More Information On Health Plan Quality
The National Committee for Quality Assurance on Thursday announced proposals to increase the amount of information available to consumers on the quality of health plans, CQ HealthBeat reports. NCQA proposed to require PPOs to report the same quality of care information that HMOs currently must report to receive accreditation from the group. In addition, NCQA proposed to make quality of care and patient satisfaction scores a larger factor in decisions about whether health plans should receive accreditation from the group. Under the proposal, quality of care and patient satisfaction scores would account for half, rather one-third, of the total score health plans must receive to obtain accreditation from NCQA. NCQA until March 30 will take public comments on the proposals and in June will finalize the proposals, which would take effect in July 2008. NCQA President Margaret O'Kane, said, "Today's confusing alphabet soup of plan types and names often distracts from what people really need to know. It doesn't matter what a plan calls itself, what matters to patients is how well they perform" (CQ HealthBeat, 2/15).
